Friday night we went to the Krewe of Artemis parade downtown. I think this is our third year in a row attending this parade and it is hands down the best New Orleans style Mardi Gras parade we go to. We got there early and so JD had time to play football with a very nice family of 4 brothers in the street. The parade had a good mix of floats, bands and other social groups. The throws are nice and the parade only lasts about an hour. It is family friendly and we really enjoy it. Before the parade started he wanted to get something from one of the carts; we told him no and explained why but he couldn’t understand. During the parade he waved his arms and yelled “throw me something” like a pro. He caught lots of toys including a little tiger which is his new favorite. After the parade was over, he understood why it was wasteful to buy something from the cart when if you are patient people throw you toys for free.
JD had his first basketball “game” Saturday. I say “game” because we purposely signed him up for a non-competitive league. They spend the first half working on skills and the second half just playing. JD seemed to have a good time. He played well with the other kids and is already showing improvement on his basketball skills.
At sunday school the kids started playing "Ground Hog" where they would come out, see their shadow, say "winter is here to stay" go back into their "cave" and hibernate. it was adorable.
Sunday we of course watched the Super Bowl.
Since JD enjoyed The Hobbit on audio so much I figured it was time to start doing read-aloud chapter books. I have “The Indian in the Cupboard” so we started on that Sunday night. Last night JD put a toy dinosaur in his special pillow pocket and told me it was going to come alive during the night. If you have suggestions for good read aloud books please send them to me (I’m looking at you, Misty and Rachel)
I got a book while on retreat called Noise: How Our Media-saturated Culture Dominates Lives and Dismantles Families. We have already cut a lot the “Noise” out of our life, but my life is still pretty noisy online. I’m seriously considering giving up Facebook for Lent.

"Farmer Boy" and "Little House in the Big Woods", both by Laura Ingells Wilder, are good choices. The Magic Tree House books aren't great literature, but kids seem to love 'em and they have some educational value. Oh, and I'm about to read "The Sword in the Stone" (T.H. White) to Nick, so I can't say for sure yet, but I bet a kid who likes the Hobbit would like that too.
